A total of 1.04 million cars and trucks were sold during the month, a 14 percent increase from January 2012, according to the research firm the Autodata Corporation. Analysts said the strong demand surpassed their expectations. They cited improved sales of pickup trucks as a sign that construction contractors and other businesses were optimistic about the economy. :
